Film Appreciation

This could be the activity group for you if you are interested in any aspect of the film industry, whether as art or entertainment, the stars, the directors, the history, the music, the FX, animation, or plain old-fashioned enjoyment.

The venue (we meet at 2pm on the third Monday of the month at Hedgerley Village Memorial Hall) is booked and we are ready to go. We only need you to turn up. Just a quick call or email in advance to let us know you are coming would be helpful. There is a charge of £1 to help cover costs of the venue hire.

Forthcoming Attractions

Monday, 21st October – THEIR FINEST - 112 mins Cert 12 War, Romance UK 2016

Funny, moving, brilliantly scripted & acted this stars Gemma Arterton as a rare female writer adding the “slop” of women’s interests to propaganda film in WW2. Sam Clafin, Richard E Grant, Bill Nighy, and Jeremy Irons are her sneery, exploitative colleagues. Gradually, they become closer, and then get the job of making an actual film about Dunkirk.

Monday, 18th November - DRIVE MY CAR - Cert 15 2hrs 59 minutes Drama Japan 2021 Subtitles

Voted best International Feature film at the 2022 Academy Awards with Best Film in a foreign language at the BAFTA’s this film carries an emotional heft, slow in the making but well worth your time. To quote one reviewer: ‘3 years after the release I feel compelled to add my 5/5 star rating. Not many movies have been able to captivate me that strongly as this one. At first being confusing and wildly unusual, the story began to envelope me, almost unnoticed, then more and more. The personal stories of suffering become more about how do deal with it, transcending into universal truths’. Spot on.

Monday, 16th December - FISHERMAN’S FRIENDS -Cert 12A 1 hour 52mins Comedy Drama UK 2019 - Voted FEELGOOD FILM OF THE YEAR

Just in time for Christmas, this is nice gentle comedy that plays out pretty much as you’d expect but that’s not to disparage it in any way because it delivers precisely what you’d want it to. The real life personalities on which the story is based will be able to distinguish historical fact from liberties taken for the sake of the narrative of course. The audience knows that happens but that doesn’t take anything away from the charm of the film. Come and enjoy!

Monday 20th Jan 2025 - THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN - Cert PG 2hrs 8mins Classical Western US 1960

The original version of this famous movie with Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson. Elmer Bernstein’s music, when the titles roll, will transport you straight back to the swinging 60’s. Considering the age of this movie. It still retains great power. The main characters are all acting action professionals, the moral messages are there for all to see and digest. As they say they don’t make movies like this anymore. And the music we’ll say no more but just fantastic
